01 | Personal Profile

Prof. Jiang Bin is currently Professor of Urban Governance and Design at the Social Hub, Professor of Computer Media and Arts at the Information Hub, and Director of the Livable Cities Laboratory at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou).

He founded the International Cartographic Association (ICA) Committee on Geospatial Analysis and Modeling in 2007, where he served as Chair and Vice-Chair, and the ICA Committee on Intelligent Transformations in 2023, where he served as Chair, and was Associate Editor for Europe of the top urban sciences journal, Computers, Environment, and Urban Systems, from 2009 to 2014. Environment, and Urban Systems. Currently, Prof. Bin Jiang serves as Associate Editor of three international journals and as a member of the editorial boards of several international journals, including the top journal of geoinformatics, International Journal of Geographical Information Science.

Prof. Jiang Bin has held positions at the Free University of Berlin, University College London, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Gävle University, Sweden. He has been invited to serve as Honorary Director of the Beijing CityLab, Scientific Advisor to Biourbanism, European Advisor to the Building Beauty Master's Program in Italy, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Vienna (Austria) and Sassari (Italy), and Visiting Researcher at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). He is also a visiting professor at the Universities of Vienna, Austria and Sassari, Italy, and a visiting researcher at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

02 | Research Direction

Prof. Bin Jiang has pioneered a series of new concepts, methods, and tools inspired by complexity science in the field of geoinformatics and the emerging discipline of urban informatics or urban science.actualResearch interests include:

◐ A theory of the evolution of the structure of urban vitality based around geospatial analysis

◐ Developed big data analytics for spatio-temporal big data

◐ Sustainable urban planning and design tools developed to address the issue of liveable city-building

03 | Recruitment Requirements

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) LivableCityLAB( http://livablecitylab.hkust-gz.edu.cn/binjiang/ )The main focus is on the intersection of urban science, computational aesthetics, neuroscience and artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on the interplay between people and their environment.

The group is currently seeking several research assistants, PhDs, and postdocs to conduct interdisciplinary research in one or two of the following disciplines: Geographic Information Science, Remote Sensing, Artificial Intelligence/Deep Learning, Sustainable Urban Planning and Design, and Neuroscience ( EEG, fMRI ) data analysis. The candidate will work with the research team on multidisciplinary projects and quantitative studies in urban governance and design for sustainable and livable environments.

04 | Application Requirements

◐ Specialization requirements

Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, or Neuroscience related field with solid math fundamentals and programming skills

◐Research experience

Research experience in computer vision, geographic information, artificial intelligence, biometric data analysis, etc. is preferred

◐ English language proficiency

Good English communication, reading and writing skills, TOEFL iBT: 80, IELTS IELTS: 6.5 overall, 5.5 in each sub-score; TOEFL score of 100 or above and equivalent level preferred

◐ Other skills

Some of the following skills are preferred: C/C++ (OpenGL, OpenCV), Python (PyTorch, TensorFlow), ArcGIS, Eprime, etc.

05 | Job Description

◐ Research Assistants (5)

We are looking for enthusiastic research assistants to join our subject group and participate in innovative research work. The group will offer a competitive salary and excellent working conditions, and we welcome outstanding individuals who are passionate about GIS, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Neuroscience, and other fields to join us. Students who are interested in applying for PhD students in the fall semester of 2024 can also apply to join as research assistants first.

◐ Doctoral students (3)

We invite motivated students to join the PhD program for the Fall 2024 semester. A full scholarship of RMB 15,000/month is offered. The study cycle is 3 years (for those with a relevant research master's degree) or 4 years (for those without a relevant research master's degree).

◐ Postdoctoral (2)

Under 35 years of age and within 3 years of obtaining a doctoral degree;

Postdoctoral appointments are for two years;

Upon successful admission to the postdoctoral station, postdocs are eligible to apply for the relevant government living allowance of 560,000~800,000 RMB/two years, research start-up funding of 350,000~450,000 RMB/two years, and other competitive subsidies, in addition to the basic salary.

In accordance with the relevant regulations of Guangzhou Municipality, we purchase social insurance and provident fund for our employees in full, and we purchase commercial comprehensive welfare insurance for our employees, their spouses and minor children, and our provident fund unit contribution ratio is 12%.

The team maintains a rigorous research atmosphere with a focus on producing work of international high quality; there are sufficient research hardware and software facilities, funding and doctoral students, and an excellent working environment and opportunities for cooperation and exchange within and outside China.
