Beijing Normal University's School of Journalism and Communication, "New Communication Ecology and Academic Paradigm in AGI Era" Summer Workshop - Cognitive Neurocommunication Experimental Technology Training

From June 25 to June 29, 2023, the School of Journalism and Communication of Beijing Normal University held a workshop titled "New Ecology of Communication and New Academic Paradigm in the AGI Era" at Beijing Normal University. The workshop aims to explore the new discoveries and opportunities in the field of communication and scholarship in the AGI era.
On June 25, 2023 at 9:00 a.m., the Summer Workshop on "New Ecology of Communication and New Academic Paradigm in the AGI Era" was officially opened by Associate Professor Yang Ya of the School of Journalism and Communication. The opening ceremony was hosted by Associate Professor Yang Ya of the School of Journalism and Communication. The guests of honor were Fang Zengquan, Party Secretary of the School of Journalism and Communication of Beijing Normal University, Professor Yu Guoming, Director of the Academic Committee of the School of Journalism and Communication and Director of the Experimental Platform for Communication Innovation and Future Media, Professor Ding Hanqing, Vice Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, Professor Yu Jianqiang, Assistant Dean Mr. Xiu Lichao and Mr. Gan Chen.


I. Hengzhi Technology--Training in experimental techniques of cognitive neurotransmission

On June 26th, 9:00am-12:00pm, Professor Zhu Jianhua from the Department of Media and Communication and School of Data Science, City University of Hong Kong gave a fascinating lecture on "Computational Methods and Intelligent Communication", hosted by Associate Professor Yang Ya from the School of Journalism and Communication, Beijing Normal University.

On June 26, 2:00-4:30 pm, the workshop invited Beijing Hengzhi Technology Co., Ltd. to train the participants on experimental techniques of cognitive neurocommunication, which was hosted by Mr. Xiu Lichao from the School of Journalism and Communication.

The training is divided into two parts, the first part isHengzhi TechnologyThe technicians explained the principle and application of EEG technology and NIR spectroscopy technology, and the second part was: experience and practical operation of Cortivision NIR brain imaging equipment in Poland and SmartBCI portable EEG equipment in Russia.



Second, Hengzhi Technology--Workshop on New Ecology of Communication and New Academic Paradigm in the AGI Era

Firstly, technical engineer Jin Can, the technical theoretical consultant of Beijing Hengzhi Technology Co., Ltd. explained the EEG principle explanation and application demonstration.

In the EEG technology section, theJin CanTechnical EngineerThe participants were first introduced to the principles and extraction of EEG (electroencephalogram), which is the spontaneous, rhythmic and integrated electrical activity of brain cells, and ERPs, which are event-related potentials with two important characteristics: constant waveform and constant latency.

Next, the classical ERPs components and studies are mainly explained, introducing ERPs naming rules and classification, P300 components and Oddball paradigm, miss-matching negative wave (MMN) and N400.Jin CanTechnical EngineerFrom the perspective of experimental design in communication, the application context and influencing factors of P300 under the context updating (context updating) theory model are introduced, while N400 can be applied to the field of PR, and experiments can be designed according to the characteristics of each ERPs component in the field of news communication research.

Finally, the integration of EEG with communication science is presented, such as the ability to apply EEG techniques to measure the communication effect (with what effect) in Lasswell's 5w theory of communication.

How to use the difference in absorbance of NIR light by two hemoglobins to detect the corresponding changes in bleeding oxygen is described, and finally the spatial resolution characteristics of NIR are combined.

In the section on principles and applications of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), Shan KeqiuTechnical EngineerThe four parts of fNIRS imaging principle, advantages and limitations, advantageous research areas and case study sharing are introduced.

Current dominant research areas of fNIRS are infant brain function studies and simulated driving, among others. And in the field of communication research, fNIRS may be applied in the communication mode dimension, such as comparing the neural synchronization and the difference in teaching effectiveness between face-to-face and computer-mediated teaching.



Three, equipment experience and hands-on
At the end of the workshop, HSI provides students with hands-on opportunities to gain a deeper understanding and mastery of the principles and applications of EEG and NIR technologies. Through these hands-on experiences, students can develop an interest in scientific research, improve their scientific literacy, and build a solid foundation for future studies and research.



After the explanation, Jin Can technical engineer demonstrated for the participants through the angle of electrode cap wearing and removal method.




The participants then experienced real-time EEG measurements and performed preliminary operations on site.
