From November 23rd to 24th, the 9th International Conference on Eco-design 2024 was successfully held in the Lecture Hall on the second floor of the library of Wuhan University of Engineering (Liufang Campus). The conference aims to discuss the cross-fusion of "Intelligence + Engineering" in the fields of ecology, healthcare and design, and is an academic symposium that promotes the exchange of diverse ideas, open discussion, and the deep integration of interdisciplinary. More than 300 experts, scholars, teachers and students from Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Southeast University, Xihua University, Zhejiang University of Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan Textile University, Central South University of Ethnic Minorities, Central South University of Economics and Law, University of Applied Sciences in Vienna and other more than 30 domestic and foreign universities and more than 10 enterprises attended the meeting. Beijing Hengzhi Technology Co., Ltd. participated in this conference as a supporting unit, which contains three sub-forums: high-end medical equipment, artificial intelligence and environment, and Husi porcelain kiln culture research.

Dr. Cai Kai Lin, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of Union Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, made a guest speech. He elaborated on the importance of combining art and design with engineering, medical and R&D, and emphasized the development trend of interdisciplinary communication and cooperation from four aspects: facing the frontiers of science and technology, the major needs of the country, life and health, and the main battlefield of the economy.

      

After the opening ceremony, experts and scholars presented wonderful lectures one by one. Xiong Caihua, professor and doctoral supervisor of School of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), recipient of National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, Yangtze River Scholar Distinguished Professor, and director of Institute of Medical Equipment Science and Engineering of HUST, gave a keynote speech, pointing out that the cross-fertilization of brain science with neuroscience, mechanics, and art design, and the control of electromechanical equipments with wisdom to realize the expected behaviors are gradually becoming a reality. For example, new breakthroughs have been made in the research and development of ultrasound diagnostic systems, minimally invasive surgical robots for cerebral hemorrhage, intelligent analysis systems for multimodal medical big data, and brain injury rehabilitation equipment.

      

Chen Xing, PhD supervisor and long term professor at School of Medical Science and Engineering, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Beijing High Precision Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering, delivered a keynote speech on "Current Status and Innovation of High-end Medical Equipment for Emergency Rescue and Treatment". He emphasized the enhancement of humanistic care and human-machine efficacy, aiming to manufacture high-end medical equipment to improve patient comfort. He is developing a new type of hemostatic equipment with integrated sensors and actuators to automatically control blood flow, maintain vital signs, and realize wireless data transmission to fill the gap in the domestic market and achieve precise hemostasis.

      

Liu Xinxiong, professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, vice chairman of the Hubei Provincial Industrial Design Professional Committee, and president of the Product Design and Innovation Design Research Institute of the China Industrial Design Association, made a keynote speech on "Professional Integration Cultivation Mode and the Practice of Innovative Design of Medical Equipment". He has accumulated rich practical experience from traditional equipment to modern medical equipment in extensive cooperation with enterprises, covering a variety of fields such as intelligent platform design and AI design.

     

Hu Tao, associate professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Mechanical Engineering of Southeast University and Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Design and Manufacturing of Micro and Nano Medical Devices, gave a keynote speech on "Design and Application of New Wearable Sensors". He said China's medical equipment industry has moved from mechanization to intelligence, and the design method has evolved from manual drawing to 3D digital design, which has significantly improved product structure, function and performance. With the development of Industry 4.0, IoT, big data and AI technologies have driven a leap in sensor technology, and advances in material science have greatly improved sensor performance. The medical equipment industry is experiencing a transformation from large-scale production to personalized customization and from production-based manufacturing to service-based manufacturing.

      

Prof. Tang Zhichuan, National "Ten Thousand People Plan" Young Top Talent, Vice Dean of School of Design and Architecture, Zhejiang Polytechnic University and Doctoral Supervisor, made a keynote speech on "Intelligent Rehabilitation Product Design Research and Application". He said that brain-computer interface technology brings new opportunities to the field of rehabilitation, and exoskeleton technology is widely used in the medical field by sensing and enhancing body functions. Based on the theory of neuroplasticity, deep learning and EEG signal processing algorithms are developed, features are extracted using convolutional neural networks, and human muscle contraction is simulated by pneumatic muscles to realize rehabilitation exercises controlled by EEG signals.

      

Alfred Sommer, Founder, Project Director and Registered Architect of BSP Design Studio; Professional Lecturer and Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, Wuhan University, Fudan University, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts, shared insights on the application of AI in the field of art creation, design and architecture.

     

Interdisciplinary artist Giannis Qu, board member of the Institute for Performing Arts (APL) at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Austria, discussed the relationship between virtual worlds, meta-universes and body art with the title "Virtual Worlds vs. Bodies-Body Expression and the Development of Body Art in Contemporary Art Contexts.He pointed out the need to reconsider the body's place in art and society in the context of highly developed virtual worlds, integrating technology, society, humanities and the arts to explore solutions.

      

Yukihiro Yoshida, Professor of Design and Crafts, Faculty of Arts, Hiroshima City University, Japan, and Doctoral Advisor, shared online and remotely, "Art Empowerment, Plans and Practices for the Integration of Historic Neighborhoods in Hiroshima City".

      

Mr. Yao Shanren, Professor, Senior Engineer, Master's Degree Supervisor of Wuhan University of Engineering, Doctoral Supervisor of University of Malaya, and "Chutian Scholar" of Hubei Province, made a keynote speech on "Eco-Leadership, Systemic Interaction: Research and Practice of Sustainable Product Design". He said that design is not only the cause of ecological problems, but also an important means to solve the ecological crisis. In order to solve the ecological crisis, it is necessary to reconstruct the relationship with nature and repair and reshape the damaged ecosystem through innovative design concepts and advanced technology. As designers and researchers, we should do good deeds with a good heart, survive poetically and live happily.

Zhao Chao, Vice President of International Design Federation, Vice President of Tsinghua University Qingdao Institute of Arts and Sciences, and Director of Tsinghua University Institute of Innovation and Design for Healthcare Industry, gave a keynote speech on the Construction of Aging-Ready Design Models. He pointed out that as global aging intensifies, it is crucial to build an aging industry system. Designers should take social responsibility and contribute to social development through their professional knowledge and skills. Pay attention to the alienation of technology in the aging society and explore how to use technology to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Designers need to pay attention to the intuitive operation ability of the elderly in using technology and products, and construct reasonable models to guide interaction.
